Volunteering as a Family: Teaching Faith Through Action

One of the greatest gifts parents can give their children is not simply telling them to do good; it is showing them how to do good.

Children learn far more from what they see than from what they are told. When they watch their parents volunteer, help neighbors in need, serve meals, visit the lonely, or offer kindness to someone struggling, those moments leave a lasting impression on their hearts. Acts of compassion become more than lessons; they become memories.

Years later, children may forget many of the words we spoke, but they will remember how volunteering made them feel. They will remember the smiles, the gratitude, the friendships, and the joy that came from helping others. Most importantly, they will remember the sense of purpose and love they experienced as a family.

That is how service becomes part of the fabric of who they are.

Children who grow up seeing faith put into action often continue serving when they are older because compassion has become a natural part of their lives. They learn that faith is not something practiced only inside a church building — it is lived every day through love, kindness, and service to others.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a wonderful place for families to volunteer together. SVdP gives parents and children opportunities to help neighbors in need while growing spiritually as a family. Whether collecting food, preparing meals, visiting families, organizing donations, or helping those experiencing homelessness, every act of service teaches valuable lessons about dignity, compassion, and mercy.

At SVdP, we believe every person deserves to be treated with respect and dignity because every person is created in the image of God. We are called to see the face of Christ in everyone we encounter; especially the poor, the lonely, and the forgotten.

When children experience this firsthand, their hearts are changed.

Volunteering together strengthens families. It creates meaningful conversations, shared experiences, and a deeper understanding of what truly matters in life. It teaches children that happiness is not found only in what we receive, but in what we give.

In a world that often focuses on self-interest, volunteering as a family teaches something different:

love, compassion, gratitude, humility, and faith in action.

And those lessons can last a lifetime.
